I am not an athlete. But I train every day. It started out as a way to keep up with everyone else. The activity, the monotony of the actions, the scheduling all fell into step with my neuroses. The exercises lessened anxiety. The scheduling lessened anxiety. The more I exercised the better I felt.
It’s been well over ten years since it was required of me. In the Academy, it was always weights, boxing and running. Those were the three things that kept me moving. Now I do everything from yoga to mixed martial arts. I don’t do it to keep up with the kids anymore. I do it because it makes me feel better.
Every morning I do a little yoga and body weight workouts. Every evening I go for a run. I do something in the middle of the day – some days it’s just throwing fireballs around until I work up a sweat. Most days I find something physical to do to keep my body active.
I take the stairs most everywhere I go – even in the skyscrapers of New York City. But that’s more out of fear of heights in the dumb glass elevators that permeate the Apex Unlimited building where we are headquartered. But even if it were enclosed I’d still likely take the stairs.
